Standards and specifications

Which Chinese standard governs terrazzo, and what does it require?

Two standards cover it. JC/T 507-2022 governs the product: its classification, its raw materials, and its test methods. It is a recommended industry standard, not a mandatory one. GB 50209-2010 governs the installation and is a mandatory national standard. Between them they set the topping thickness, the chip size, the flatness tolerance and the wear figure.

What is the right cement-to-chip ratio in terrazzo?

Between 1:1.5 and 1:2.5 by volume, cement to chip. Which end of that range you use is decided by what you are laying it on and what has to happen to it afterwards. GB 50209-2010 clause 5.4.9 sets the range and requires the mix to meet the design, with the ratio confirmed by a mix test report.

How flat is a terrazzo floor allowed to be?

Three millimetres on a standard terrazzo floor, two millimetres on a high-performance one, measured with a two-metre straightedge and a wedge gauge. That is GB 50209-2010, table 5.1.7. For comparison the same table allows five millimetres on a concrete slab and two on a self-levelling compound.

Do you need antistatic terrazzo, and what resistance should it have?

Only in specific buildings: operating theatres, electronics assembly, pharmaceutical clean rooms, and some data centres. Where it is required, GB 50944-2013 sets the surface resistance of an antistatic cement-based floor, which is what antistatic terrazzo is, at between 1.0 x 10^4 and 1.0 x 10^9 ohms. Below that band is conductive, above it is dissipative.
