What is an 8 to 12 mm terrazzo panel?

A precast panel with the aggregate running through its whole thickness rather than a thin topping on a thicker slab, made in the 8 to 12 millimetre band. The consequence is arithmetic: at 8 millimetres the largest chip the code allows is about 5.3. You are buying a different look as well as a different thickness, and the look is fine aggregate.
Chip size against topping thicknessA horizontal scale in millimetres. For each topping thickness from 8 to 18 millimetres, a bar shows the topping and a second bar shows the largest stone chip permitted, which is two thirds of the thickness. The figures, and where each one comes from

12 to 18 mm topping 8 to 12 mm band
Where the aggregate is in the matrix, graded through it through the whole panel
Chip ceiling up to 12 mm at 18 mm topping about 5.3 mm at 8 mm
Grinding reserve a full re-grinding cycle limited; state the reserve before ordering
Good for floors, wall bases, stairs tops, wall panels, overlays, furniture

Why the processes are not interchangeable

The difference from a 12 to 18 millimetre topping is not the thickness, it is where the stone is. In a conventional topping the aggregate is graded through the matrix and the grinding takes the surface down to it, so the floor carries a deep reserve that can be re-ground over decades. In an 8 to 12 millimetre panel the whole body is stone, which is why the edge of the panel is the giveaway and why it cuts like a stone rather than like a topping. What that costs is reserve: there is less to take off, which is a real limitation and is why the pages here ask for the reserve to be stated rather than implying one.

What these figures are, and what they are not

The band is our own supply. The chip ceiling at each thickness is JC/T 507-2022 clause 5.3 arithmetic — EVIDENCE.md section D1 — and the 12 to 18 millimetre topping range is GB 50209-2010 clause 5.4.1. ⛔ We have not published a test report on an 8 mm panel, no grinding reserve figure is quoted for one, and no weight per square metre is given for this band. Ask us for what we hold.
